On September 17, 2026, more than 160 students, professionals, community leaders and industry practitioners gathered at Baruch College for the Inaugural Islamic Finance Conference. The Baruch Muslim Business Association hosted the event in collaboration with the NYU Muslim Student Association and Columbia Muslim Student Association.

The Baruch Islamic Investment Research Group (BIIRG) presented its work in Sharia-aligned investment research. The conference also launched The Mahalla Network, a new professional network for Muslim students and young professionals across industries.

Dr. Mohamed Sawwaf (Manzil), Dr. Aamir A. Rehman (Innate Capital) and Nusrat Ahmed (Musaffa) led a panel on how Islamic finance works in practice and how students can prepare for careers in the field. NYC Deputy Public Advocate Kashif Hussain addressed attendees. The Office of the New York City Public Advocate recognized BMBA, BIIRG and the three panelists for their service to the community.

The conference is the start of ongoing work. BIIRG will continue its research, education and industry engagement. The Mahalla Network is planning its flagship MPower Summit for Fall 2027.
